Skills & Certifications
Your Resume & Skills Profile (/person/skills) is where you manage the verified capabilities
that drive AI matching. Skills are the single biggest input to your match score, so keeping this
page accurate and current pays off directly in better rankings.
The page is organized into sections: resume upload, work experience, a skill graph, your skill inventory, certifications, and education.
/person/skillsUnderstand the capability catalogue
When you add a skill or certification, you're drawing from Illumera's shared capability catalogue — a curated set of skills, certifications, and the correlations between them. Because everyone draws from the same catalogue, companies and the matching engine compare candidates on a common vocabulary.
The catalogue also models certification ↔ skill correlations: holding a recognized certification can reinforce the related skills on your profile. Add both your skills and your certifications so these relationships are captured.
If a skill or certification you add isn't recognized yet, it's submitted for review and added to your profile once approved. You'll see a notice listing any unresolved items.
Import or re-import a resume
Goal: Auto-fill experience, skills, certifications, and education from a resume.
- In the Upload Latest Resume card, click Browse Files (or drag and drop).
- Upload a PDF or Word (.docx) file (max 15 MB). The AI parser extracts your items.
- In the AI Extracted — Review Before Saving panel, uncheck anything you don't want.
- Click Confirm & Save to Profile.
/person/skillsIf your profile already has experience, skills, certifications, or education, uploading a new resume will replace all of it with the newly extracted items. You'll be asked to confirm with Replace & Continue before anything is overwritten.
Add and manage skills
Goal: Build an accurate inventory of your skills and proficiency levels.
- In the Skill Inventory section, click + Add Skill.
- Search the catalogue and select a skill.
- Choose a Category (e.g. Frontend, Backend, Data / Analytics, DevOps / Cloud, Security, Design / UX, Domain / Industry, Leadership / Management).
- Set a Proficiency level and the Last used year.
- Click Add Skill.
To change a skill later, hover its row and click the edit icon; to remove it, click the delete icon.
/person/skillsProficiency levels
Proficiency is a direct input to match scoring — be honest.
| Level | Description |
|---|---|
| Aware | Familiarity with the concept; aware of its existence and use cases. |
| Beginner | Can apply with guidance; learning through practice. |
| Intermediate | Independent practical application; regularly uses in work. |
| Advanced | Deep applied knowledge; solves complex problems with this skill. |
| Expert | Recognized authority; designs systems, teaches others, sets standards. |
A skill's Last Used year matters. Skills not used for two or more years are flagged as potentially stale in the Action Required card, which prompts you to confirm or update the proficiency.
Read your skill graph
Goal: See your strengths and gaps at a glance.
Once you have at least 3 skill categories, the Skill Graph renders a radar chart of your average proficiency by category, with callouts for your Strongest and Developing areas.
/person/skillsGitHub passive skill verification
Goal: Earn verified badges that strengthen your skill profile.
When you connect GitHub (via Settings → Integrations), Illumera passively analyzes your commit activity and adds a GitHub Verified badge to matching skills. Hovering the badge shows the commit count and the most recent activity date.
/person/skillsGitHub-verified badges are private to you. Whether companies can see them is controlled by the badge visibility toggle in Settings → Integrations.
Add certifications
Goal: Record the credentials that reinforce your skills.
- In the Certifications section, click + Add Cert.
- Enter the certification name and, optionally, the credential / badge number.
- Set the obtained date and expiry date, and add a credential URL if you have one.
- Click Add Certification.
/person/skillsThanks to the catalogue's certification ↔ skill correlations, certifications can reinforce the related skills already on your profile.
Add work experience and education
Goal: Round out your profile with roles and schooling.
- In Work Experience, click + Add Role and enter the job title, employer, start/end years (or mark Current), an optional description, and skills used.
- In Education, click + Add Education and enter the institution, degree, field of study, and graduation year.
Click Export Profile at the top of the page to generate a resume from your structured profile data.
